Grandma moved to Buffalo, Oklahoma, after the death of Grandpa and my cousin Cari and I loved to stay with her in the summer. She would let us eat ice cream with chocolate syrup for breakfast, play with everything in her house, and do all the things that good Grandmas do. There was just nothing better than going to visit Grandma! She was a very short, round lady who, to the best of my knowledge, never drove a car and always wore a "house dress" with an apron pinned to the front. She always smelled like Avon perfume and had a hug that would just squish you with softness.
This recipe has been around for a long time, in many variations. This one, however, is straight from Grandma.
Dump Cake
1 large can chunk pineapple
1 can cherry pie filling
1 white cake mix
1 stick butter or margarine
In a 9x12 baking dish, dump undrained pineapple and cherry pie filling. Sprinkle the cake mix over the top. Cut the stick of butter into pats and place over the top of the cake mixture.
Bake 1 hour in a 350-degree oven. Cool; cut in squares and serve with a scoop of whipped topping and a cherry on top.
It tastes like heaven.

Grandma on her Wedding Day.
A family favorite.
ReplyDeleteThings were so much simpler then.
Even those of us who don't follow traditional "recipes" know that "grandma's" good stuff ALWAYS started with a "hug that would just squish you with softness."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memories
Aww..I love grandmas! My own Granny was a fabulously strong-minded, opinionated woman that made the best banana pudding in the world. She's always have one made when I came over..still warm. She always smelled like Jergen's lotion also.
