Wilson, We Have a Problem

I had mentioned to the meanolmeany some time back that "one of these days, I'll tell you what I really think about what's wrong with the Sooners", so here goes.

Okay, as a true fan with a permanent place on the bandwagon, I gotta tell ya, I find very little wrong with the team itself. You're right, they've lost 3 games this season.  But they've lost those 3 games by a TOTAL OF 5 POINTS, against some pretty good opponents.

One thing, before I get into my expert totally amateur opinion of what went wrong in the Sooner footbaw nation this year, let me say this, because of the comments made on this post about Sammy and his decision to end his college career.

That kid has more class than most of the so-called grown-ups I know.  He obviously realizes the value of relationships and experiences and knows that those "times of his life" will be what he looks back on, later on in his life, as being the most valued.  Yes, he probably could be a gazillionaire right now if he would have went to the NFL, but you know what?  All that money can't buy a rich life.  And since Sam is an Academic All-American, majoring in finance, I imagine he understands a little about money.  I just hadn't realized that a kid of that age could have such a deep understanding of what will be important later on down the road, God bless him.

Okay, so what happened this year?

Well, there's the injuries.  Those are the breaks and there's just not a lot that can be done about something like that.  You have to hope the 2nd stringer is ready to play, but at the same time you also have to realize that they're 2nd string because the other guy was better.

My vote for the seemingly insurmountable issue of what else is wrong?

It's that danged ol' "Offensive Coordinator" Wilson!

The only coordinating he's done, in my opinion, is offending me and from what I read and hear, a good portion of the Sooner fans out there.  I mean, for Pete's sake, the play-calling leaves something to be desired when I know from the comfort of my living room exactly what play will be ran at any given time.  If you play predictably, then you know what?  The outcome is fairly predictable as well.

The last great offensive coordinator we've had was that dude of now-Kansas-fame, Mangino.  I sure do miss him, and I'm thinking that Bob Stoops misses him every single Saturday too.  There was never a moment when he was around that I doubted the play-calling.

As for now, heck, I could have the job.  All I need is a place up in the press box and some cool headphones, and I'd just look at my little list of plays and pick the one for 3rd-and-long in a 3rd-and-long situation.  Because IT'S THE SAME ONE EVERY TIME!!!  There apparently is also a play for every other situation!  We can't have any of that unplanned, big play, take-a-chance stuff!  Huh-uh!  We gotta stick to our list of plays that didn't work the last 3,478 times and try them again, because one day we might get lucky!

So anyway I texted my comrade Pierce last night and just asked her what the biggest problem on Owen Field is this year.  She immediately responded "It's that crackjaw Kevin Wilson!  I've been saying that for two years!  When is Bob going to send him packin'?"

So I will obviously take the Pierce into the press box with me to "hep out".  She will also need a pair of snazzy headphones.

That's Pierce, circa 1975 or so.  Hasn't changed a bit.  Amazing!

  1. I knew the quarterback was taken out but didn't know about Wilson. I'll have to discuss this with hubby since he's the football fanatic around here. I mean, the man lives & breathes it!

What kind of coach calls the same plays over & over anyway? A soon-to-be-gone coach?

UT plays OSU this weekend, which we are NOT looking forward to....
