I Wonder Where She Thinks She's Going

Dog Owners: How do you stop a dog from digging holes?

I do believe that Madge thinks that a pirate buried his loot in the backyard and she's just the girl to find it.

Let's see. There are two good-sized holes over by a tree. And two right next to the concrete patio - one of which she dug so deep and narrow that I swore she was installing buried cable. I've scolded her, swatted her behind with a broom.... And it's like she forgets after a few days and is back on a treasure hunt.

Tonight, right after I finished vacuuming up enough dog hair to knit a sweater, she came in the house with the evidence (dirt) all over her face - and knew she was gonna be in trouble because she went straight to the "time-out rug", where she always goes when she needs to hide out and rest up from prospecting.

I thought she might outgrow this digging thing but I'm starting to wonder.....

Well, you can chop her tail off right below her ears. That usually stops a dog from digging.

Or, you can use cayenne pepper. It seems to work pretty good with Sadie. When I discover that she's found a new spot where there is obviously a treasure chest, or something that died decades ago that she just now sniffed, I sprinkle cayenne pepper all over the place.

But...she just quits digging there, and moves on to less peppered pastures.

I really don't know what it is. I swear...she will go for months without digging, and then go on a tear!

But, go take a look at this guy's dog training blog. There may not be anything on there about dogs digging, but I'll damn betcha that if you'll e-mail him, he'll be more than glad to lay out what he knows...which is a lot.

He's good folks that loves dogs, and loves to see dog owners and their pets live together in perfect harmony.

Thanks, Andy! Ima gonna check out the pepper and the blog. I'm gettin' scared I might fall in one of her holes out there and come out in China.

Staci, a long time ago I wrote a post about how Midnight (the bravest, most loyal black lab that ever lived) broke my foot.

Stepped in one of her holes, and darn near really did break it. It still hurts sometimes.
